There were certain common mistakes I observed many candidates were making that gets them rejected right away even before having been interviewed!
"That's unfair!" you might say. But from an employer's perspective its not unfair. For example, if you're applying for a virtual therapist's position, it is a given that you will need to interact with clients over emails and texts; and if your first email for the application of the position itself is subpar, it tells the employer that they will have to spend a lot of time in training you in basic etiquette and honestly, no-one wants to make that kind of time investment!
I have compiled a list of basic etiquette that may come in handy while applying for new jobs. Therefore, to make sure you're shortlisted, always keep the following pointers in mind ๐:
๐Unless the job poster has asked you to give them their email, don't drop your email in the comments on their posts and ask them to contact you. An employer will not have the time to contact you and neither is that the usual flow of application. Instead, always ask where you can send in your information and YOU send an email.
๐ Always use formal language when making the first contact. No short forms, no SMS language, no informal "hey!", and no one liners. Introduce yourself formally, mention why you're reaching them and always use formal greetings.
๐When sending an email, NEVER leave the subject line blank. This shows extreme lackadaisical approach.
๐Always, always write some body of content. I have actually received emails that had no subject and in the body it just said "Cv", or "My cv"! Remember that you are writing to an organization, no matter how big or small. You don't know who is filtering through those emails. No-one knows who you are ! So always add a formal introduction, even if you haven't been asked for a cover letter!
๐ Talking about cover letters, those of you who have them made, have them starting with "Dear Hiring Manager". While this may make sense if you're interacting with HR, what if your cover letter is read by a founder or CEO? It would seem downright off-putting! So if you know the person you're applying to, always edit the letter by saying "Dear xyz (name)" and always personalize the letter for each organization instead of just shooting off a template.
๐ Always use a professionally clicked photograph on your CV. Selfies and pictures clicked at functions and events look good for your social media profile but convey a very unprofessional image in work environments.
I hope these pointers will elevate your chances of getting shortlisted for more positions! All the best!! ๐ป
